High performance on the high seas
He Dreiht – which means “he turns” in Low German – will soon be living up to its name. It will be EnBW’s fifth offshore wind farm in Germany. At peak times, more than 500 people and 60 ships have been working to construct what is Germany’s largest offshore wind farm. We have been building it without state subsidies around 90 km northwest of Borkum since May 2024 and will start installing the latest generation of wind turbines from Vestas with an output of 15 MW each in early 2025. By the end of 2025, He Dreiht will be able to supply the equivalent of 1.1 million households with its output of 960 MW and will almost double the capacity of EnBW’s offshore portfolio. This project is one of the largest energy infrastructure projects in Europe to date.
From coal to natural gas to hydrogen
We have started commissioning our first hydrogen-ready gas power plant in Stuttgart-Münster, where we are replacing the former coal boiler with a highly efficient gas turbine plant with an output of 124 MW. Other fuel switch projects are being realized in Heilbronn and Altbach/Deizisau. The switch from coal to gas in these projects will save around 60 % of the current CO₂ emissions.
Sustainably storing energy
We are modernizing the Rudolf-Fettweis Plant in Forbach to transform the old run-of-river and storage power plant, parts of which are more than 100 years old, into a highly efficient pumped storage power plant. The new plant is due to be placed into operation by the end of 2027. It will make an important contribution to guaranteeing the security of supply in future by delivering a flexible supply of electricity in response to current demand and by compensating for grid fluctuations in a matter of seconds. We operate other pumped storage power plants with our partner Vorarlberger Illwerke vkw and our investment Schluchseewerk AG.
Recharge everywhere, quickly and easily
Our EnBW HyperNetwork is growing continuously: You will now find an EnBW fast?charging point almost every 50 km across Germany, in part thanks to cooperations with our partners. These charging points with a capacity of up to 400 kW can provide cars with enough electricity to travel 400 km in just 15 minutes. Over the past seven years, the number of charging points accessible to EnBW customers has grown to more than 700,000 across 17 different countries.
Reimagining the electricity grid
Our subsidiary TransnetBW is involved in the realization of the SuedLink and ULTRANET transmission grid projects. Once it has been completed, the 700 km SuedLink transmission line will transport wind energy from the north of Germany to the centers of consumption in the south. ULTRANET runs from Osterath in North Rhine-Westphalia to Philippsburg in Baden-Württemberg. We need to expand the grids to integrate the growing proportion of renewable energies and satisfy the growing demand for electricity.
A look into the future
Rather than returning to school in 2024, around 270 young people decided to take up a profession and started an apprenticeship or a dual study program at EnBW and Netze BW. We offer more than 30 different apprenticeships and dual study programs at 19 locations to prepare young people for the energy world of the future.
